Reredos
Intricately carved with trefoils and arches, the reredos, or screen, behind the altar is typical of ecclesiastical architecture. Usually carved with Biblical scenes, the term “reredos” comes from the Anglo-French “arere” meaning “behind.” Gilded to highlight the carvings, the reredos is a beautiful backdrop to the sanctuary. Its shapes are reintroduced on the ends of the pews.
